An American picnic straight out of a movie! ☀️

When we think of an American summer, most of us picture a picnic in the park, a sizzling grill, ice-cold lemonade, and lots of tasty treats. No wonder—picnics have been among the most popular summer traditions in the U.S. for over a hundred years. And the best part is, you can create the same atmosphere right here at home!

Although today we mainly associate picnics with American movies, their roots go back much further. The word “picnic” (from the French pique-nique) first appeared in France as early as the late 17th century. It referred to a social gathering where each guest brought something to eat or drink.

After the French Revolution, public parks opened to the general public, and picnics quickly became a popular way to spend free time.

This tradition made its way to the United States during the 19th century, when large urban parks began to emerge. However, Americans adapted it to their own tastes—adding barbecues, BBQ sauces, baseball, iced lemonade, and plenty of iconic snacks. It was then that the summer picnic style we know today from movies and TV shows was born.

🥪 The first mention of the word “pique-nique” dates back to 1692 in the French book *Origines de la Langue Française*.

🌳 Public picnics became widespread in the U.S. mainly in the mid-19th century, along with the creation of parks such as New York’s Central Park, which opened in 1858.

🔥 After World War II, thanks to the boom in suburbs and gardens, the BBQ became a symbol of the American summer.

🌭 Today, more than 150 million hot dogs are eaten in the U.S. on July 4 (Independence Day), making this holiday one of the country’s largest picnicking and barbecuing events.
